Listen to Song of the Birds, an encore piece performed at the concert, written by Nancy Gifford-Humphreys and dedicated to Michael Kemp:

Quote markWe do have one more piece of music for you today. This piece is a carol, and it’s based on a simple folk tune from Catalonia, Spain called Song of the Birds. This carol is, in fact, thematically connected to Haydn’s Creation. The text mentions those creatures that our bass soloist sang about; splendid, beautiful birds. These birds arrived on the scene billions of years after the Creation of the world. Eagles, sparrows, finches, robins, and even a partridge see the glorious star in the sky ascending on the first Christmas Eve, and they celebrate. I composed this piece as a musical tribute to our brilliant, dedicated, and tireless star, Michael Kemp. Michael founded this group 21 years ago, and this will be his last winter concert with us. I cannot put into words how Michael has inspired me, and all of us, through his many gifts. Each week I take his wisdom and his warm-ups back to the choir I direct, for example. His leadership has touched many musicians (amateurs and professionals) and audiences exponentially. Having sung with many directors, including the legendary Robert Shaw, I must say that for me, Michael Kemp gets first prize. If each performer on this stage came forward to share just how Michael Kemp has added to their musical and personal lives over the years, we might be here all night. Instead, let me represent each member of the Academy Chorale with a big “thank you” to Michael through this new music, Song of the Birds. Thank you.
